The water cycle is a continuous process that describes how water moves on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. It involves several key stages:

  • Evaporation: The process where water from oceans, rivers, and lakes turns into vapor and rises into the air due to the heat from the sun.
  • Condensation: As water vapor rises, it cools and changes back into tiny droplets of water, forming clouds.
  • Precipitation: Eventually, the droplets combine to form larger droplets and fall back to Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
  • Collection: Water collects in bodies of water like rivers, lakes, and oceans, and the cycle begins again.

Here's a fun experiment to help kids visualize the water cycle!

Materials Needed:

  • A clear plastic container with a lid
  • Small amount of water
  • Ice cubes
  • Small rocks or soil (optional)

Steps:

  1. Pour a small amount of water into the container.
  2. If using, add small rocks or soil to simulate land.
  3. Seal the container with the lid.
  4. Place ice cubes on top of the lid.
  5. Observe the water cycle in action as the water evaporates, condenses on the lid, and eventually drips back down like precipitation!
