Buzz the Mosquito – How Mosquitoes Thrive in Your Backyard and What You Can Do About It

Hey, It’s Buzz Again!
"Did you know we mosquitoes are expert survivors? We can thrive in your backyard, even without much water! Today, I’ll share how we do it and how you can make your space less inviting to us."

Secret #1: We Don’t Need Much Water to Breed
Why: You might think mosquitoes only breed in large puddles or ponds, but we’re not that picky! Even a small amount of stagnant water in containers, flowerpots, or clogged gutters is enough to create a breeding ground. Buzz’s Tip: Always check for standing water in places like birdbaths, wheelbarrows, or old tires. A quick rinse every few days can prevent us from turning your backyard into a breeding ground!

Secret #2: We Love Shade and Cool Spots
Why: We prefer shady, cool areas, especially during the day when the sun is at its peak. This is why you’ll find us hiding under bushes, tall grass, or even your outdoor furniture. Buzz’s Tip: Trim overgrown vegetation and keep grass short. Creating more sunlight in your yard will help reduce the cool, damp areas where we thrive!

Secret #3: We’re Active at Dusk and Dawn
Why: Mosquitoes are more active during dusk and dawn because it's cooler and there's less wind. This is when we love to come out and find our next meal (blood, not nectar, for us females!). Buzz’s Tip: If you need to be outdoors during these times, wearing long sleeves or using repellent can help keep us away. You can also install fans, as mosquitoes aren’t great at flying in strong winds!

Secret #4: We’re Attracted to Carbon Dioxide
Why: We mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide (CO2), which you exhale when you breathe. The more CO2 you produce, the more likely we are to find you! Buzz’s Tip: While you can't stop breathing, you can avoid attracting mosquitoes by staying away from high-CO2 areas like outdoor grills or areas where many people are gathered.

Secret #5: We Love Body Heat and Sweat
Why: Mosquitoes are also drawn to body heat and sweat. We love the warmth of your skin, especially after you’ve been active. Buzz’s Tip: Wearing light-colored clothing and using insect repellents with DEET or citronella can help keep us away, especially when you're out exercising or spending time in your garden.

Secret #6: We Can Hide in Your Home Too!
Why: Mosquitoes can slip inside your home through cracks in windows or doors. If you don’t get rid of indoor breeding areas, we can thrive inside, too! Buzz’s Tip: Seal any cracks around windows and doors, and consider installing window screens to keep us from sneaking inside. Be sure to fix any leaky pipes or water damage to prevent us from finding water inside your house.

How to Protect Your Backyard
Why: Now that you know how we survive, it’s time to fight back! You don’t have to put up with us buzzing around. Buzz’s Tip: Regularly empty containers that collect water, install outdoor fans, use mosquito netting or repellents, and encourage natural predators like birds, bats, and dragonflies to visit your yard. These small changes can make a huge difference in keeping us at bay!

We’re Sneaky Survivors, But You Can Outsmart Us!

"Now you know all the tricks we use to survive in your backyard! But don’t worry – with a few simple changes, you can keep us at bay and enjoy your time outside without the buzz. Stay alert, stay proactive, and we’ll leave you alone!"
