Roti (Chapathi) Making - Step-by-Step Recipe
Soft, fluffy, and delicious roti (chapathi) is an Indian flatbread made with simple ingredients. Follow this easy recipe to make perfect rotis at home.
Ingredients
- 2 cups whole wheat flour (atta)
- 1/2 cup water (adjust as needed)
- 1/4 tsp salt (optional)
- 1 tsp oil or ghee (optional, for softer rotis)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt (if using).
- Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead the dough until it becomes soft and pliable.
- Once the dough is smooth, cover it with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20-30 minutes.
- After resting, divide the dough into equal-sized balls (about the size of a golf ball).
- Lightly flour a clean surface and roll each ball into a thin, round disc using a rolling pin.
- Heat a tawa or flat griddle over medium heat. Place the rolled roti on the hot tawa.
- Cook for 30-40 seconds until bubbles appear, then flip the roti.
- Cook the second side for 20-30 seconds, then flip again and press gently with a spatula to help it puff up.
- Remove the roti from the tawa and keep it warm in a covered container or wrap it in a clean cloth.
- Repeat the process for the remaining dough balls. Serve warm with curry, dal, or your favorite side dish.
